Small URBAN OASEs
June 5 – Sep. 15, 2025
THE PARK & GARDEN GARDEN COMPETITION – WE CELEBRATE OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY – LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS ARE INSPIRING AT THIS YEAR’S SMALL GARDENS

Show Gardens
This is the venue for the “Small Gardens” garden competition. Here, garden architects and designers, as well as garden and landscape architects, compete for the favor of the jury and visitors. Different implementation concepts are presented on annually changing themes, highlighting the extent to which the respective garden philosophy influences the design and structure of the gardens and the choice of plants.

GARdEN Competition 2025
The theme of this year’s competition is: SMALL URBAN OASES.
We are looking for concepts that bring a touch of nature into the city through plants and other sensory elements, thus contrasting with the typical paving.
We thank the sponsors for their generous support of the garden competition and all participants for their hard work and dedication!

Small Urban OASES

EXPERIENCE THE SYLTER DUNE AND ENJOY IT DAILY
IDEA:
The resulting garden is intended to showcase the possibilities of natural stone, clinker brick, high-quality materials, and accessories. On an area of approximately 12 x 12 meters, you will find our work with natural stone, fired clinker bricks, and other high-quality materials, which exude a special flair and can and should be found in every home. This garden is not only a feast for the eyes, but can also be felt and experienced.
By applying traditional and traditional methods of laying and placing materials, we create straight and curved paths. These not only make the garden accessible, but are also an important element in structuring and designing a green oasis. Garden paths add character and fulfill individual needs for using and enjoying the garden.
Bordered by a classic Frisian wall, in various designs, with hand-picked stones, such as those found along the North Sea coast and on the island of Sylt, among others. The low-maintenance planting includes ornamental pines, native trees, and various ground-covering perennials. All plants were selected to cope well with changing climatic conditions, require little maintenance, and are characterized by their high site tolerance. A “green thumb” is not necessarily required for this type of design; this beautiful garden is also suitable for enthusiasts who have little time for gardening but still want a small oasis of well-being in every season.
PLANTS:
Woody plants: Dwarf pines, common hydrangeas, panicle hydrangeas, dogwoods, holly, lavender, maples, pines, birch
Perennials: Cranesbill, common knotweed, plumbago, sweet thyme, bluebells, dwarf speedwell, sweet sage, blue rue
Grasses: Snow marmot, fountain grass

GREEN REFUGE
IDEA:
Bordered by a hedge of red bladdernut, an enclosed space is created that simulates a backyard. The small garden serves as a retreat from the noise and hustle and bustle of city life. The natural design stands in stark contrast to the monotonous cityscape, full of sealed surfaces. It is intended to counteract humanity’s increasing alienation from nature and creates a place where people can literally ground themselves. The small garden house and seating areas make this urban oasis versatile: for gardening, relaxing, dining and celebrating outdoors, or even as an outdoor workspace. Since the question of sustainability is more pressing than ever today, recycled materials such as peat-fired clinker and reclaimed wood were used in the construction.PLANTS:

GREEN ROOM IN THE BACKYARD
IDEA:
Urban gardens are of particular importance. They are important habitats for plants, small animals, and insects in urban spaces. The garden we designed demonstrates that even gardens amidst the gray concrete of the city can become green oases. The strictly geometric garden is enclosed on all sides by walls and hedges. Two levels create an additional sense of space. The areas are only partially sealed. Planted areas absorb abundant rainwater and provide a pleasant microclimate, even in the hot summer months. Large solitary trees and espalier trees provide protection from prying eyes from the neighbors.
In the areas where the sun finds its way in, lush perennials bloom.
In the shaded areas of the hedges and shrubs, structural perennials with different leaf colors and shapes add special accents.
PLANTS:
Woody plants: Hornbeam hedges, sedge ash (umbrella tree), Japanese viburnum, and ornamental apple trees as espaliers.
Perennials: Structural perennials and grasses in shade, prairie perennials in sunny and dry areas.
